Narsarsuaq Gardar Cathedral Ruins
The Gardar Cathedral ruins mark the site of medieval Greenland’s most ambitious religious structure, built by Norse settlers around 1150 AD. Massive stone foundations outline what was once the largest cathedral in the North Atlantic colonies, complete with a bell tower and cemetery that held over 140 graves. The site sits on a grassy plateau overlooking Tunulliarfik Fjord, with the modern Narsarsuaq Airport visible across the valley.
The ruins are easily accessible via a 10-minute walk from the airport terminal along a marked trail. Interpretive signs explain the cathedral’s history and the broader Viking settlement that thrived here for nearly 500 years. The site offers excellent views of the fjord and surrounding peaks, making it a popular stop for visitors transiting through Narsarsuaq Airport.
