Mykines — Westernmost Island Cliffside and Puffin Colony Viewpoint
Mykines is the end of the road in the Faroe Islands — literally. You get here by ferry from Sørvágur or by helicopter, and once you’re standing on that clifftop above the gannet colony at Mykineshólmur, you understand why people make the effort. Puffins line the grass slopes in summer, gannets wheel overhead, and the suspension bridge to the lighthouse islet is narrow, windy, and unforgettable. The village of Mykines has around a dozen permanent residents and a small guesthouse. No fuel, no shop worth mentioning — come fully stocked.
Ferry runs from Sørvágur are seasonal and weather-dependent — cancellations are routine, so build buffer days into your plan. Helicopters also serve the island but are pricier and fill up fast in summer. The clifftop trail to the lighthouse is marked but exposed; high winds are the norm. Visit May through August for puffins. This is a hike-and-viewpoint situation; no vehicle access beyond Sørvágur.
End of the Faroes. Puffins and vertical cliffs.
