Manning Gorge — Kimberley Waterfall and Deep Pool

Manning Gorge is a genuine standout on the Gibb River Road, and overlanders who skip it regret it. The walk from the campground crosses the Manning River — knee to waist deep depending on season — then follows a marked trail about 2 km to a two-tiered waterfall pouring into a wide, deep, turquoise pool ringed by sandstone. It’s big enough to swim laps in and cold enough to matter after a dusty Gibb River day. Boab trees crowd the trail margins. The light is best in morning before the gorge walls go full shadow.

Access is from Mount Barnett Station, which charges a day-use fee for non-campers. The crossing is generally safe in dry season but can rise dangerously fast in a storm — check conditions before you wade. Crocodile signage is posted; stay alert, read it, and make your own call. No motorised access beyond the carpark — foot traffic only from there.
