Laguna de Pozuelos — Puna de Jujuy Flamingo Lagoon and Biosphere Reserve
Laguna de Pozuelos sits at roughly 3,650 meters on the Jujuy Puna, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar wetland that hosts puna flamingos, Andean flamingos, and Chilean flamingos in numbers that will stop you cold. The lake is enormous — about 16,000 hectares — and on calm mornings the salt flat reflections make the horizon disappear. Guanacos, Andean foxes, and vicuñas work the shoreline. There is a small APN ranger post at the main access track off Ruta Nacional 9, which doubles as an informal checkpoint and info point.
Access from Abra Pampa is approximately 30km on a mix of gravel and dirt track — high-clearance recommended, 4WD if wet. No fuel, no services at the lake itself. The reserve is open year-round but flamingo numbers peak between November and March. Altitude hits hard here — acclimatize before doing anything ambitious.
Three flamingo species at 3,650m on the Puna.
