Camping Municipal de Susques — Puna de Jujuy Plateau Basecamp

Susques sits at roughly 3,900 metres on the Puna de Jujuy, straddling Ruta 52 and the start of Ruta 40’s extreme northern section. The municipal campground is a no-frills gravel flat maintained by the local municipality — think basic toilets, a water tap when the supply’s running, and zero shade on an open desert lot. It’s the last established camp before the high volcanic plateau between Susques and Abra Pampa, and it earns its place in your database purely for that reason. Small enough that a few rigs fill it out. Locals are friendly; the small village has fuel and a handful of grocery options.

Access is paved via RN 52 from Jujuy city. Cold nights are a given year-round at this elevation — expect sub-zero even in summer. Wind off the puna is relentless. Confirm the tap is flowing before you rely on it — dry periods happen. Best season is April through November to avoid the worst summer electrical storms that roll across the plateau.
