Volcán Tuzgle — Puna de Jujuy Volcanic Cone Viewpoint

Volcán Tuzgle is a massive, visually dominant stratovolcano that looms over the Puna de Jujuy at roughly 5,500 meters. You can see it clearly from Ruta 40 between Susques and Abra Pampa — the cone rises almost perfectly symmetrical from the flat plateau, with flanks scarred by lava flows and ash fields. The surrounding landscape is barren, windblasted altiplano at 3,700–4,000m base elevation, dotted with vicuñas and the occasional flamingo lagoon. This is high Andean wilderness at its most raw.

A rough 4WD track leads toward the base from a turnoff near the town of José de San Martín on Ruta 40. Altitude hits hard up here — acclimatize in Susques before pushing higher. No services, no signage worth trusting. Best visited November through April when the track is less likely to be iced over. A genuinely humbling piece of Andean geology right off one of South America’s great overland routes.
