Kuiseb Canyon — Cañon Road Viewpoint and Gorge Drop

Stand at the lip of the Kuiseb Canyon and you’re looking at the hard boundary between two worlds: north of the river, flat gravel plains stretch toward the Swakop; south, the orange dune sea of Sossusvlei is locked in place by the Kuiseb’s seasonal floods. The canyon itself drops sharply into ancient granite and schist, carved by a river that rarely reaches the ocean anymore. Zygmunt and Henno Martin famously survived the entire WWII period hiding in these gorges — that alone tells you how remote and resourceful this place demands you be.

Access is via the C14 between Walvis Bay and Maltahöhe. The canyon viewpoint near the C14 bridge crossing is the most accessible pull-off. No formal facilities. High-clearance is smart for any detour off the tar. Best visited April–October when heat is manageable. Permit required as part of Namib-Naukluft entry — buy at MET offices in Walvis Bay or Sesriem.
