Klesilkwa River — Stein Valley Eastern Trailhead Viewpoint
The eastern approach to Stein Valley via the Lizzie Bay FSR and Klesilkwa River drainage is the harder, quieter, and more rewarding way into one of BC’s last intact wilderness river valleys. This viewpoint and staging area along the lower Klesilkwa sits at the edge of Nlaka’pamux territory and is within walking distance of documented red ochre pictographs on the canyon walls — some of the most significant Indigenous rock art in the southern Interior. The Stein Valley was a major spiritual travel corridor for the Nlaka’pamux people for thousands of years before it was protected. The river itself is fast, clear, and cold.
Access via the Lizzie Bay FSR from the Pemberton side requires a high-clearance vehicle — expect rough logging road conditions, creek crossings dependent on snowmelt timing, and zero signage once you leave the FSR junction. Best from late June through September. No fee, no services, no cell. Self-sufficient rigs only.
Pictographs, wild river, and serious quiet.
