Judge C.R. Magney State Park
This North Shore gem sits 14 miles northeast of Grand Marais along Highway 61, offering 27 semi-modern campsites tucked into boreal forest just inland from Lake Superior. The real draw is Devil’s Kettle Falls — a bizarre geological feature where half the Brule River vanishes into a giant pothole and nobody knows where it goes. The 1.5-mile hike to the falls is moderately challenging with rocky terrain and root systems.
Sites can handle most rigs up to 40 feet, though the access road has some tight turns. Spring and fall offer the best flow at the falls, but black flies can be brutal in June. Reserve ahead for summer weekends — this is popular with both overlanders and tourists chasing the mystery of the disappearing river.
