Black River Forest Road 30 Loop

Forest Road 30 cuts a winding path through Superior National Forest’s Black River drainage, where rusted logging equipment still marks old timber camps from the 1940s. The route follows the Black River’s meandering course through dense boreal forest, crossing multiple tributaries via narrow timber bridges and fording McDougal Creek at mile marker 12—a rocky crossing that’ll test your approach angles and waterproofing.

This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and muddy sections that persist well into summer. Best tackled May through September when snow clears but before hunting season crowds arrive. No permits needed, but fuel up in Grand Marais—it’s 60 miles to the nearest gas after you leave pavement. Multiple dispersed camping spots along the river offer solitude that’s increasingly rare this close to the Boundary Waters, plus excellent trout fishing if you pack a rod.
