Imogene Pass

Infamous 13,114-foot alpine pass connecting Ouray to Telluride via one of Colorado's most challenging and scenic 4WD routes.

Imogene Pass ranks among Colorado’s most demanding 4WD routes, climbing to 13,114 feet between Ouray and Telluride. The trail features steep grades, loose rock, narrow shelf roads with serious exposure, and alpine conditions that can change rapidly. Views from the summit encompass the San Juan Mountains in all directions, with remnants of historic mining operations scattered along the route. Weather can turn dangerous quickly above treeline.

This route demands experienced drivers with well-prepared 4WD vehicles, recovery gear, and proper preparation for alpine conditions. Open roughly July through September depending on snow. Multiple sections have limited room to pass oncoming traffic. Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Not recommended for inexperienced mountain drivers or stock vehicles.
