This unassuming parking area marks the start of Black Bear Pass, widely considered one of the most dangerous 4WD routes in Colorado. The shelf road climbs to over 12,800 feet with no guardrails and deadly drop-offs. Several fatalities have occurred here over the years. Only modified high-clearance 4WDs with lockers should attempt this route, and only experienced drivers with spotters.
Access is seasonal — typically July through September depending on snow conditions. The trailhead itself is basic dirt parking with no facilities. Cell service is nonexistent. Check weather conditions carefully before attempting, as afternoon thunderstorms make the exposed route extremely hazardous.
