Hole-in-the-Wall Lava Tube

Point of Interest

This impressive lava tube stretches deep into the volcanic rock formations near Hole-in-the-Wall, created when molten lava flows cooled and hardened while the interior remained hot and flowing. The main entrance is large enough to walk into without stooping, and the tube extends several hundred feet into the hillside. Bring headlamps or flashlights — it gets pitch black beyond the entrance chamber.

Access is via a quarter-mile trail from the Hole-in-the-Wall picnic area parking. The trail is well-marked but rocky in places. The tube stays cool year-round, making it a welcome break from desert heat. Watch for loose rocks near the entrance and wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
