Glacier National Park Going-to-the-Sun Road

The Crown Jewel of Montana's mountain roads — a narrow, winding 50-mile engineering marvel through the heart of Glacier National Park.

This legendary mountain road climbs from Lake McDonald through alpine meadows to Logan Pass at 6,646 feet, then descends to Saint Mary Lake. The narrow, winding pavement clings to cliff faces with stone guardrails and frequent pullouts for wildlife and photography. Vehicle restrictions are strictly enforced: nothing over 8 feet wide or 21 feet long. Expect heavy summer traffic and construction delays.

Open seasonally from late June to mid-October depending on snow. The road typically closes completely in winter. Park entry fee required. Summer crowds are intense — arrive early morning or late evening for the best experience and parking availability.
