George Washington National Forest Dunkle Knob Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Scattered sites along Forest Road 274 below Dunkle Knob offer some of the best dispersed camping in the George Washington National Forest. Sites sit at 3,200+ feet with sweeping views east toward Shenandoah Valley. Flat spots accommodate 4-6 rigs with established fire rings and decent spacing between camps. Popular with motorcycle groups and 4WD crews hitting nearby forest roads.

Access via FR 274 from Bridgewater — gravel road in good condition but gets washboarded after heavy use. Best April through October; winter access depends on snow conditions. No facilities or water sources, pack it all in. Fire restrictions during dry periods.
