Garden of the Gods Recreation Area
Massive sandstone bluffs and rock formations dominate this 3,300-acre recreation area in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. The main overlook provides sweeping views across the Illinois Ozarks, while several shorter trails wind between towering rock pillars and natural arches. The area gets busy on weekends during peak fall color season, but weekday visits offer solitude among the ancient geology.
Access is via paved Karbers Ridge Road, then a short gravel drive to the main parking area. The observation trail is fully accessible, while backcountry paths require moderate hiking. No camping is permitted within the recreation area itself, but several forest campgrounds lie within a 20-minute drive.
