Garden of the Gods Observation Trail
This short, paved trail leads to the iconic sandstone outcroppings that define southern Illinois. The formations are smaller than western counterparts but impressive for the Midwest — 20-foot sandstone bluffs with natural arches and balanced rocks. Parking lot accommodates big rigs easily.
Trail stays open year-round and is accessible to most visitors. Gets crowded on nice weekends, especially fall color season. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer better light and fewer crowds. No camping at the trailhead, but several state parks nearby.
