Faro — Pelly Mountains Gateway Town Viewpoint and Staging

Point of Interest

Faro sits on the Campbell Highway (Highway 4) at the edge of the Pelly Mountains, roughly 360 kilometres east of Whitehorse. It’s a small, quiet town — population a few hundred — built around the now-closed Faro lead-zinc mine, once one of the largest open-pit lead-zinc mines in the world. For overlanders running the Pelly Mountains Road toward Rose Lake or the Lomond Lake Road out of Ross River, Faro is your last reliable fuel, resupply, and communications stop. The Yukon government mine cleanup site adjacent to town is a legitimate industrial-scale landscape feature worth stopping to take in.

The town has a gas station, a small grocery, a campground, and cell service — rare luxuries before you head into the Pelly Mountains backcountry. Campbell Highway access is paved to Faro; surface quality varies east toward Ross River. The area is prime Dall sheep and woodland caribou habitat. Wildlife encounters on the road out are routine.

Last fuel before the Pelly Mountains swallow you.
