Faro — Campbell Highway Community and Pelly Mountains Gateway Viewpoint
Faro is one of those Yukon towns that feels like it’s still deciding whether to survive or not. Built to support the Anvil lead-zinc mine, it’s now a small community with a surprisingly intact infrastructure — gas station, a small store, a campground, and a wildlife viewing area for the Fannin sheep and woodland caribou that roam the surrounding ridgelines. If you’re running the Pelly Mountains Road toward Rose Lake or the Pelly Banks Road south toward the BC border, Faro is your fuel and mental checkpoint before the real wilderness starts.
Located 16 km off the Campbell Highway (Hwy 4) on a paved spur. The Faro Mine Reclamation site — one of the largest mine cleanup projects in Canadian history — dominates the hillside above town and is a sobering industrial ruin worth a look. The Dena Cho Trail system begins at the edge of town if you want to stretch your legs. Cell service is marginal at best. Carry extra fuel — next reliable stop in either direction is a long way out.
Pelly Mountains doorstep — fuel up, look up.
