Elk State Forest Elk Trail Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

Scattered along the back roads of Elk State Forest, these informal camping spots put you in the heart of Pennsylvania’s elk range. The sites are basically wide spots along forest roads where generations of hunters and wildlife watchers have pulled off. Most accommodate one or two rigs comfortably, with natural clearings surrounded by hardwood forest. You’re likely to hear elk bugling in September and October, and might catch glimpses of the herd at dawn or dusk.

Access requires navigating a maze of unmarked forest roads — a GPS and local knowledge help. The roads are generally passable by any vehicle in dry conditions but can get sketchy when wet. No amenities beyond what nature provides. Respect the elk and keep your distance if you encounter them.
