Drakensberg Amphitheatre — Royal Natal Escarpment Viewpoint
The Amphitheatre in Royal Natal National Park is the crown jewel of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, a sheer basalt cliff face stretching five kilometres and topping out above 3,000m. The Tugela Falls — second tallest waterfall on earth — drops off the escarpment edge here in five successive leaps. Standing at the base and looking up, the scale genuinely messes with your sense of proportion. The viewpoints from the valley floor are accessible by any vehicle; the plateau requires a serious hike or horseback.
Access via the R74 from Bergville to the Royal Natal park gate. The road is paved to the park entrance; inside is dirt, manageable in any clearance. Gate fees apply for the park. Busy during South African school holidays — arrive early or midweek. The Rugged Glen campsite inside the park puts you right at the foot of the wall.
