Derryclare Nature Reserve Wild Camping
Scattered informal camping spots along the shores of Derryclare Lough in the shadow of Maumturk Mountains. Rocky, heather-covered ground with stunning views across the lake to the Twelve Bens peaks. No facilities but several level spots big enough for overlanders. Water from the lake needs treatment.
Access via narrow country road off the R344 near Recess. Can get boggy after heavy rain — high-clearance recommended. Popular with hillwalkers and photographers, especially during sunrise. Leave no trace principles essential in this fragile landscape.
