Connemara — Killary Harbour Fjord Viewpoint and Shore Pull-In
Killary Harbour is the real deal — Ireland’s one and only fjord, carved by glaciers and filled with cold Atlantic seawater. The pull-in along the R335 on the southern shore gives you a long, clear view down the fjord toward the open ocean, with Mweelrea — Connacht’s highest peak — rising steeply to the north. The light here in the morning is something else. It’s a legitimate stop, not a manufactured viewpoint, and in summer you’ll share it with a few other vehicles. In winter you may have it entirely to yourself with low cloud sitting right on the ridge tops.
The road along the southern shore is narrow but paved. Most rigs handle it fine. The northern shore track via Delphi is rougher and more rewarding. This is a day-use pull-in only — no camping facilities here. Leenaun village a few kilometres east has a pub, a small shop, and basic services. Cell signal is present but patchy.
Ireland's only fjord. Cold, deep, and real.
