Delaware Water Gap Thunder Swamp Dispersed Sites
Thunder Swamp offers a handful of primitive sites along the edge of a large wetland meadow, with clear views east toward the Pocono ridgeline. The area supports great wildlife watching — herons, osprey, and the occasional black bear pass through regularly. Sites are basically flat spots in the grass with fire rings, no tables or formal amenities. Mosquitoes can be brutal in summer, but fall colors here are spectacular.
Reached via Thunder Swamp Road off Route 402, then a half-mile walk from the parking area. No vehicle access to the actual sites, so plan to haul gear. The meadow can flood during spring snowmelt, making it inaccessible until late May most years. Technically part of the National Recreation Area but managed more like dispersed camping.
