Clayton River Crossing — Birdsville Track Causeway and Flood Gauge
Sitting roughly 60km north of Marree, the Clayton River crossing is one of the first genuine tests on the Birdsville Track. In normal dry-season conditions it’s a non-event — a concrete causeway over a sand-and-gibber floodout. But when rain falls on the Flinders Ranges catchment, water moves fast and the crossing floods quickly. The flood gauge is real and relevant: locals and the SA Road Department monitor it, and readings above 0.3m mean turning around. Don’t guess it.
Seasoned Birdsville runners pull over here to check tyre pressures before the corrugations north of Mungerannie and to scan the horizon for the storm cells that make this road a lottery in summer. No facilities, no shade worth mentioning — just a gibber plain, a few gidgee trees, and a gauge post that has saved rigs from becoming part of the floodplain furniture. Travel April–October for best odds. Summer floods can strand vehicles for days.
Flood gauge that decides your fate north of Marree.
