Birdsville Track — Diamantina River Floodplain Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Pull off the Birdsville Track near the Diamantina River crossings north of Marree and you’re into proper Channel Country. The floodplain opens up into a broad, pale clay terrace bordered by low coolibah and ghost gum woodland. No facilities, no signage — just a fire circle of river stones left by the last crew through. Sunset here is genuinely ridiculous. Kangaroos move through at dusk. In a dry season the ground is firm and level; after rain it’s a different story entirely.

Access via the main Birdsville Track — 2WD-capable in dry conditions, full 4WD territory when wet. The floodplain can cut the track entirely after significant rain; check with Marree or the SA Department for Infrastructure and Transport before committing. No water. Carry everything you need. Stay limit unenforced but leave-no-trace is expected on pastoral lease country.

Diamantina floodplain, sky on three sides.
