Cascadas de Agua Azul
Agua Azul’s limestone terraces create a stunning cascade of bright blue pools stepping down through dense jungle. The water gets its impossible turquoise color from dissolved limestone — most dramatic during dry season when sediment is low. Multiple levels offer swimming holes and photo ops. Gets crowded with tour buses by midday. Entry fee required, with vendors selling food and souvenirs near the main falls.
Located 64 kilometers from Palenque via Highway 199 south, then a well-marked turnoff. Paved road most of the way, then 4 kilometers of decent gravel to the falls. Parking area can handle big rigs. Combine with nearby Misol-Ha waterfall for a full day. Water levels vary dramatically by season — highest May through October.
