Cañón del Sumidero National Park

Point of Interest

This spectacular limestone canyon drops nearly 3,000 feet from rim to river, creating one of Mexico’s most dramatic geological features. The Grijalva River winds through the bottom while crocodiles sun on muddy banks and spider monkeys chatter in the canopy. Boat tours launch from Chiapa de Corzo, but the real overlander’s move is driving the rim road — five miradores offer jaw-dropping views into the abyss.

The rim road is paved but narrow with steep drop-offs and no guardrails in places. Best views happen early morning when mist rises from the river. Parking at viewpoints is tight on weekends when Mexican families pack the place. Christmas Tree waterfall at Mirador La Ceiba is the money shot.
