Canyonlands National Park Upheaval Dome Overlook Trail

Trailhead

Well-maintained trailhead with restrooms and interpretive signs leading to one of Utah’s most debated geological mysteries — a 3-mile-wide circular structure that’s either an impact crater or salt dome collapse. The moderate hike climbs over slickrock to rim viewpoints overlooking the colorful twisted rock layers. Parking fills quickly during spring and fall. Two overlooks offer different perspectives: the first at 0.8 miles, the second (better) at 1.5 miles.

Located in Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky district, accessible via paved roads from Moab. The trailhead sits at the end of Upheaval Dome Road, about 12 miles from the visitor center. Park entry fee required. Best hiked early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat and crowds.
