Slickrock Trail — Moab’s Iconic Sandstone Circuit via the Practice Loop

The sandstone circuit that built Moab's legend.

Expert

The Slickrock Trail outside Moab has been chewing up overconfident rigs since Sand Flats Recreation Area opened it to motorized use in the early 1970s. The route follows painted white dots across bare Entrada sandstone fins and bowls above Mill Creek Canyon, with near-vertical roll-overs, exposure on both sides, and a short practice loop at the trailhead that a lot of first-timers skip — and immediately regret. The canyon views are legitimate: the La Sal Mountains backdrop the whole run, and you can see the Colorado River corridor to the west. But this trail is about the technical challenge first and scenery second.

This is an expert-level 4×4 and motorcycle trail. Serious belly and rocker damage is a real possibility for anything with less than 10 inches of ground clearance and a wheelbase over 100 inches — longer rigs simply cannot make several of the tight bowl transitions. Lockers front and rear are strongly recommended. The trail is open year-round but is best avoided in wet weather when the sandstone gets slippery. A daily use fee is collected at the Sand Flats trailhead booth. Bring enough water for the full loop — no shade, no water on route. Camping is available in Sand Flats Recreation Area adjacent to the trailhead.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner or Wrangler run Slickrock, or do I actually need lockers?

Stock rigs will struggle and likely get stuck — this trail earned its expert rating. Lockers front and rear are strongly recommended; aggressive tires and a skid plate setup are minimum ante for not embarrassing yourself on the steep sandstone pitches.

When is Slickrock closed, and should I avoid summer entirely?

The trail stays open year-round but summer temps regularly push 100°F+ on exposed sandstone, making it genuinely dangerous. Stick to March–May or September–November — you'll also get better traction on the rock when it's not baking.

Is there a fee to access Sand Flats, and do I need a permit?

Yes — Sand Flats Recreation Area charges a day-use fee (currently $15 per vehicle) collected at the entrance gate. No advance permit is required for day use, but if you're camping in the area, fees apply per night as well.

What's the hardest section and what exactly makes it technical?

The sustained steep sandstone slabs with near-vertical approach and departure angles are what break rigs — one wrong line and you're sliding sideways with no recovery. The painted route markers help, but on the hardest pitches even experienced drivers spot each other through to avoid rollover situations.

Is there any water on the trail, and how far is the nearest gas from the trailhead?

There is zero water on the trail — carry at least 2 gallons per person minimum given the exposed terrain. Gas is available in Moab roughly 4 miles from the Sand Flats entrance, so top off before you head up.
