Bruneau Sand Dunes

Idaho's tallest sand dunes rise 470 feet above the desert floor, creating a Sahara-like landscape perfect for sandboarding and stargazing.

These massive sand dunes are the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, towering nearly 500 feet above the surrounding desert. The constantly shifting sands create an otherworldly landscape that feels more like the Sahara than Idaho. Popular with sandboarders, ATV riders, and photographers, especially during golden hour when the dunes glow against the stark desert backdrop.

Access is via paved roads to the state park, then short hikes to reach the dune faces. The observatory here offers some of the darkest skies in the region for stargazing. Summer temperatures can be extreme, making spring and fall the ideal seasons for exploration.
