The massive Bruneau Dune dominates the landscape like a misplaced Saharan peak, climbing 470 feet above the surrounding desert floor. This single-structured dune — formed by converging winds that keep it stationary — offers sandboarding, hiking, and some of the darkest night skies in the region. The adjacent lakes attract waterfowl and provide stark contrast to the golden sand. Summer temperatures can hit 100°F, making dawn and dusk the prime exploration times.
Located 18 miles northeast of Bruneau on paved Highway 78, then 3 miles south on a good gravel road. The observatory operates spring through fall with public programs. Facilities include restrooms and picnic areas, but no shade structures on the dune itself — bring sun protection and plenty of water.
