BLM Whitney Pocket — Virgin Mountains East Flank Dispersed Camp

Whitney Pocket sits on the east flank of the Virgin Mountains about 12 miles north of Mesquite off Gold Butte Road. The site is a natural sandstone pocket surrounded by red Jurassic dunes and low desert scrub — it’s photogenic country and one of the better-known BLM dispersed areas in southern Nevada. Plenty of flat sandy spots to pitch a tent or park a rig. Rock climbers and bouldering enthusiasts also use the area, so expect some company on weekends. No water, no toilets, no trash service. Pack it in, pack it out.

Gold Butte Road is a maintained gravel road accessible to most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. The last few miles into the pocket get sandier — aired-down tires help. The area sits within the Gold Butte National Monument boundary. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F — this is a fall through spring destination only. BLM 14-day stay limit.
