BLM Sand Flats Recreation Area Slickrock Camping
Sand Flats offers some of Utah’s most scenic dispersed camping on expansive slickrock shelves overlooking red rock canyons and the snow-capped La Sals. Dozens of sites spread across the rolling sandstone, each with natural windbreaks and fire-safe rock surfaces. Gets packed during peak season (March-May, September-October) but plenty of room to spread out. No facilities beyond vault toilets at the main trailhead.
Access via Sand Flats Road from Moab — paved for the first few miles, then maintained gravel. Most sites require only high-clearance 2WD, though the best overlooks demand careful tire placement on slickrock. Day-use fee required, but camping is free. Popular with mountain bikers hitting the Slickrock Trail, so expect company.
