BLM Fossil Falls Dispersed Area
Scattered camping spots on BLM land surrounding the Fossil Falls geological area, where ancient lava flows created polished rock formations that look like frozen waterfalls. About 15-20 unofficial sites spread across the desert floor, most suitable for any size rig. No facilities except for pit toilets at the Fossil Falls trailhead parking area 0.5 miles away. Popular with rock hounds and stargazers — the night sky here is exceptional.
From US-395 about 40 miles north of Ridgecrest, take Cinder Road east for 0.5 miles. Most sites are level and don’t require 4WD, though some sandy spots benefit from aired-down tires. 14-day limit, but rangers rarely patrol. Can be windy, so stake everything down.
