Olancha Sand Dunes Dispersed Camping

Expansive sand dune field with scattered camping spots and sunrise views over the Sierra Nevada from the Owens Valley floor.

These lesser-known sand dunes stretch across several square miles of Owens Valley floor, offering multiple dispersed camping opportunities with dramatic Sierra backdrops. Sites range from firm-packed areas suitable for any vehicle to deeper sand requiring 4WD and recovery gear. Popular with OHV riders and photographers chasing sunrise light on the peaks.

Access from Highway 395 via sandy tracks that vary in difficulty—scout during daylight before committing. Wind can be fierce, especially spring afternoons. Fire restrictions often apply due to dry vegetation. Winter nights drop well below freezing, but days are usually pleasant for exploring the dunes on foot.
