Austin — US-50 Loneliest Highway Town and Full Resupply

Austin, Nevada sits at roughly 6,600 feet on US-50, about 12 miles northwest of the Kingston Canyon Road junction. It’s a genuine old mining town — not a tourist trap — with a gas station, the International Café and Bar, and a small market that stocks the basics. Population hovers around 200. It’s your last real fuel and food stop before dropping into the Toiyabe backcountry heading south, and your first cold drink when you roll out. Cell service is limited but exists on Verizon near the main drag.

The town is also home to Stokes Castle, a three-story stone tower built in 1897 that’s worth a five-minute stop. Don’t expect extended hours anywhere — plan your resupply during daylight. If you’re running Kingston Canyon Road from the north, top off your tank here without hesitation.
