Antelope Wells Port of Entry — Boot Heel Desert’s Southern Terminus and Mexico Border Gate
Antelope Wells is the southernmost land port of entry in New Mexico and the logical terminus for overlanders running the Trans-America Trail through the Boot Heel. There’s almost nothing here — a small CBP station, a cattle guard, a gate, and the open Chihuahuan Desert in every direction. The crossing handles light traffic and keeps limited hours, so don’t roll up expecting a 24-hour operation. It’s documented, named, and worth understanding before you commit to this direction of travel.
The drive south from Hachita on NM-81 is roughly 60 miles of blacktop through wide-open rangeland. Cell service is essentially nonexistent. Fuel up in Lordsburg or Deming before you leave civilization — there is nothing between Hachita and the gate. If you’re not crossing into Mexico, this is still a genuine overland milestone worth rolling to and documenting.
End of the trail. End of the USA.
