Alabama Hills Recreation Area

Dispersed camping among iconic granite boulders and arches with Sierra Nevada backdrop, famous from countless Western films.

Alabama Hills offers some of California’s most stunning dispersed camping, scattered among towering granite formations with the Sierra Nevada range rising dramatically to the west. The BLM-managed area has dozens of established camping spots along dirt roads, most accommodating rigs up to 40 feet. Popular with rock climbers and photographers, it can get crowded on weekends, especially spring and fall. Fire restrictions apply during dry seasons.

Access is via Whitney Portal Road west from Lone Pine, then various dirt roads threading through the formations. Roads are generally suitable for any vehicle, though some spots require high clearance. No facilities — pack out everything. Fourteen-day limit, no reservations, free camping.
