Whitney Portal Rock Creek
Reliable mountain creek flowing year-round from the Sierra Nevada high country at 8,360 feet elevation. Crystal-clear snowmelt water that’s safe to drink with proper treatment. Popular water source for overlanders hitting the Whitney Portal area or running routes toward Lone Pine. The creek runs alongside the portal road with several easy access points.
Water flow varies seasonally — strongest during spring snowmelt, but runs consistently through summer and fall. Easy access from the paved Whitney Portal Road about 2 miles below the portal itself. Gets busy during Whitney climbing season but plenty of room for quick water stops.
