BLM Alabama Hills Dispersed Camping
The Alabama Hills offer some of the most dramatic dispersed camping in the Eastern Sierra, with the jagged Whitney massif rising 10,000 feet above scattered granite boulders that have served as Hollywood backdrops for decades. Hundreds of established sites weave between the rock formations on dirt roads accessible to any vehicle. Sites range from intimate single-rig spots tucked behind boulders to large group areas that can handle multiple rigs and trailers.
Access via Whitney Portal Road or Movie Flat Road from Highway 395 in Lone Pine. Roads are generally good gravel with some sandy washes. Popular with photographers for sunrise/sunset shots of the Sierra escarpment. Can be crowded on weekends and holidays, but the area is large enough that you can usually find solitude. No services, pack out all trash.
