Afton Canyon BLM Dispersed Area
Afton Canyon offers primitive camping along a rare Mojave Desert perennial stream, surrounded by colorful badlands and interesting geology. Several dispersed sites sit along Afton Canyon Road both above and below the BNSF railroad tracks, with some offering shade from scattered cottonwoods. The area sees moderate use from rockhounds and desert explorers but rarely gets crowded.
The 3-mile dirt access road is suitable for most vehicles when dry but can be challenging after storms. Train noise from the busy BNSF line is constant — consider earplugs. No amenities beyond scattered fire rings at established spots. Water flows intermittently in the canyon bottom but should be treated.
