Afton Canyon — Mojave River Gorge Viewpoint

Afton Canyon is one of the few places in the Mojave Desert where you’ll find flowing water, cottonwood-lined banks, and sheer basalt walls rising 200-plus feet on either side. It’s a genuine geological anomaly on an otherwise brutally dry landscape — the Mojave River is forced to the surface here by an underground bedrock barrier, and it shows. Bighorn sheep haunt the upper rims, and the contrast between the blue-green riparian corridor and the surrounding desert is something you don’t forget. If you’re running the Mojave Road east-to-west, this is your payoff canyon before the push toward Barstow.

Access via Afton Canyon Road off I-15 between Baker and Barstow (roughly Exit 221). The road drops down to the canyon floor and crosses the river — depth matters seasonally and after rain events. High-clearance is smart; 4WD is wise if the wash has seen recent rain. The BLM campground sits right at the river. Cell signal is essentially nothing out here.
