Nasca Lines Desert Circuit
Ancient mysteries in Peru's most desolate desert
This remote circuit explores the harsh pampa desert where the famous Nasca Lines were carved into the earth over 1,500 years ago, accessing viewpoints and mysterious sites most tourists never see. The route follows old mining roads and ancient water channels (puquios) through absolutely desolate terrain, passing the massive Nasca Lines viewing tower and continuing to remote geoglyphs like the Palpa Lines. Navigation becomes critical in this featureless landscape where wrong turns can lead to dangerous dead ends in mining claims or military zones.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles and desert driving experience—the biggest danger here isn’t technical terrain but getting lost or breaking down in 120°F heat with no shade for miles. Carry double the water you think you need, GPS backup systems, and emergency communication. Best driven April-November when temperatures are merely brutal instead of deadly. No permits required for most sections, but respect the archaeological sites and don’t drive on the Lines themselves. This is pure desert solitude where you can camp under some of the clearest skies on earth.
