Brokeoff Mountain Road — Lassen Volcanic National Park Backcountry Approach via Mill Creek Summit

Volcanic weirdness on Lassen's forgotten south side.

Moderate

Most people drive the paved Lassen Volcanic Highway and call it a day. The ones who know better take the gravel spurs off Mineral Road and Mill Creek Summit, threading through old-growth fir and past hydrothermal ground that smells like the earth is cooking itself alive. The route traces the southern rim of the Lassen volcanic complex, passing within sight of Sulphur Works steam vents before pushing up toward Brokeoff’s 9,235-foot base. It’s not glamorous terrain — no dramatic canyon walls or river crossings — but the volcanic desolation is genuinely weird and worth every mile of washboard.

This is a moderate high-clearance route, not a technical crawler, but the roads soften badly in early season and close under snow well into June most years. A stock 4WD with decent clearance handles it fine when conditions are dry. Fuel up in Red Bluff or Susanville — there’s nothing at Mineral or Chester worth counting on. No permit required for dispersed camping on national forest land bordering the park boundary, but inside park boundaries you follow NPS rules. Best window is July through October. Cell service disappears past Mineral and doesn’t come back until you drop into the valley.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 4Runner or Wrangler handle this without any lift?

Yes — a stock 4WD with high clearance is the minimum and will get through in dry conditions. The trail is rated moderate, but rutted sections near Mill Creek Summit can drag low-hanging skid plates, so factory rock rails and bash plates are a real asset here.

When does the trail actually open and when does snow shut it down?

July through October is the reliable window. Snow can linger at the 7,800-foot max elevation well into June, and early fall storms can close it fast — check the Lassen National Forest road conditions line before you go, not just the weather app.

Do you need a permit to run this trail or camp along it?

No permit is required for the Lassen National Forest dispersed camping sections. If your route clips inside Lassen Volcanic National Park boundaries, standard park entry fees apply — $35 per vehicle as of 2024. Confirm current fee status at fs.usda.gov/lassen.

What's the hardest section and what makes it sketchy?

The approach near Mill Creek Summit is where it gets honest — loose volcanic rock, off-camber shelf road sections, and ruts that deepen significantly after any rain. It's not a white-knuckle trail, but a moment of inattention on the shelf sections with a top-heavy rig will get your heart rate up.

Are there water crossings, and can I refill drinking water on the trail?

Yes, there are water crossings — typically passable but variable depending on snowmelt; early season can run deeper. There are natural water sources along the route, but treat everything — volcanic geology in this area can introduce minerals and contaminants that filters alone won't always catch. Carry more than you think you need.
