Deschutes National Forest — Tumalo Creek Upper Road Dispersed Camp

FR 4603 follows Tumalo Creek up into the ponderosa and lodgepole fringe east of the Three Sisters Wilderness, delivering dispersed sites that are creek-adjacent, shaded, and blissfully underused compared to the Cascade Lakes corridor. Sites are primitive — no infrastructure, no signage, just cleared pullouts in the trees. Water from the creek is available but treat everything; Tumalo runs clear but the watershed gets stock use. This is a realistic eastern staging option for overlanders approaching Broken Top country from Bend without hammering the volcano highway crowds.

Access is via Tumalo Falls Road out of Bend — paved to the falls, then FR 4603 takes over as packed dirt and gravel. The road is passable to most rigs but gets rocky and narrow above the falls. Check with the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District for seasonal closures — snow and deadfall can block upper sections into June. Cell service vanishes quickly once you leave the paved section.
