Big Bend Ranch State Park — Sauceda Group Camp and Ranger Station

Sauceda sits at the geographic center of Big Bend Ranch State Park and functions as the park’s interior operations hub. There’s a ranger station here, meaning you can check in, get current road conditions, and sort out your backcountry permits before pushing deeper. Camping at Sauceda is designated and managed — it includes a bunkhouse facility for groups and standard tent/vehicle sites in the surrounding compound. It’s not glamping, but it’s a legit staging point with more infrastructure than anything else you’ll find on this side of the park. Water is available here, which makes it a critical resupply stop for backcountry trips.

Sauceda is accessed via the Sauceda Road off FM 170 — roughly 25 miles of maintained dirt road that’s passable for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions but can cut you off after heavy rain. Reserve through Texas State Parks. This is the best basecamp for exploring the Solitario, the Fresno Canyon corridor, and the park’s interior trail network.
