Lesotho Highlands Traverse — Maseru to Semonkong via the Maluti Mountain Interior

Lesotho is the only country on Earth where every single point of land sits above 1,400 metres — and the Semonkong route from Maseru takes that seriously, climbing through the Maluti Mountains past 3,000 metres before dropping into the Maletsunyane River canyon. The Maletsunyane Falls, one of Africa’s highest single-drop falls at 192 metres, sits at the end of the run and justifies every kilometre of punishment it takes to reach it. The road — calling it that charitably — deteriorates badly east of Roma, becoming eroded basalt track with multiple unmarked river crossings. Local pony-trekkers are often the best source of intel on crossing conditions after rain.

Classify this as Difficult to Expert depending on season. Short-wheelbase 4WDs handle the tight switchbacks better than long-wheelbase rigs; a locker front or rear is strongly advised. Fuel must be carried from Maseru as reliable resupply is nonexistent past Roma. The Dry season from May to September is the window — summer rains from November through March render most crossings impassable or genuinely dangerous. No permit required for the traverse itself. Cell service drops to nothing east of Roma. This is one of Africa’s most underrated overland destinations, full stop.
