Sendero del Glaciar Spegazzini – Los Glaciares Backcountry
Restricted glacial access deep in Patagonian ice fields
This restricted-access route penetrates the remote northwestern sector of Los Glaciares National Park, following an old gaucho trail to within striking distance of the massive Spegazzini Glacier terminus. The track crosses the Rio de las Vueltas multiple times before climbing through ancient lenga forest to treeline, where the Hielo Continental Sur emerges in all its blue-white glory. The final approach requires navigating around active crevasse fields and recent moraine deposits that shift with each season’s glacial advance and retreat.
Expert-level difficulty requiring extensive 4WD experience and glacial travel knowledge. Specialized permits mandatory through Administración de Parques Nacionales, limited to scientific/research purposes. High-clearance 4WD with winch essential for river crossings and loose moraine. Best November through March, but weather can turn lethal instantly. No camping allowed – day access only. This isn’t tourism – it’s legitimate expedition territory where mistakes prove fatal. Only for those with serious backcountry credentials and proper glacial safety training.
