Rubicon Trail Col du Parpaillon Military Road

Europe's most feared high-altitude military road

Expert

The Col du Parpaillon road snakes up the southern face of the Massif des Écrins at gradients that’ll test your clutch and your nerve. Originally carved by French military engineers in 1891 to connect the Ubaye and Durance valleys, this narrow shelf road clings to crumbling limestone faces with drops that disappear into morning fog. The summit tunnel, blasted through solid rock at 2,780 meters, stays locked behind metal gates from October through June—when it’s passable at all.

This is expert-level terrain requiring a capable 4WD with low-range gearing, recovery gear, and mountain driving experience. Rockfall, ice patches, and sudden weather changes make this a serious undertaking even in summer. No fuel, water, or services exist on the route—carry everything you need for the 25-kilometer crossing. Those who make it earn bragging rights to one of Europe’s most challenging high-altitude passes and views across the entire French Alps that’ll stick with you long after the adrenaline fades.
